That comment sits partway down a 267-comment thread. At the top of the thread is a photograph of a Tesla work order for a 2013 Model S, total just under $40,000, posted with the caption “Upgrading to a 90kw. Just under $40k out the door.”
The commenter was right to ask. That invoice is a large part of where the internet’s Tesla battery number comes from, and it is not a battery replacement price.

That question, or some version of it, shows up every few weeks in the Model X forums, usually from someone who has just noticed one corner sitting lower in the driveway. The answers they get back range from a few hundred dollars to five figures, which is not much help.
Both answers are true. That is the actual problem.

It’s a good question, and the answer matters, because a five-point gap sounds like the difference between a healthy pack and one heading for trouble. So people panic. They shouldn’t — and the reason why is a nice illustration of the difference between a number and a measurement.

Both are telling the truth. A used Model S or X is not one gamble — it’s a stack of small, checkable facts, and almost every expensive surprise in the first story was visible before purchase if you knew where to look.

My 2017 Model X 100D (HW3, with a paid MCU2 + HW3 retrofit done years ago) went into Tesla’s Vancouver service center for an intermittent Autopilot dropout — diagnosis: overheating in the self-driving control unit. Tesla replaced the Autopilot ECU (2nd and 3rd gen modules) under warranty. The loaner they handed me was a 2026 Model Y on HW4, and I had it for one day.

What Is OBD-II?
