“What is the damage going to be (cost) when it’s time to replace them?”
That question, or some version of it, shows up every few weeks in the Model X forums, usually from someone who has just noticed one corner sitting lower in the driveway. The answers they get back range from a few hundred dollars to five figures, which is not much help.
Both answers are true. That is the actual problem.
The short answer
A Tesla air suspension repair costs anywhere from about $425 to well over $5,000, and which end you land on is mostly decided before you ever call the service centre. The cheap repairs are single components caught early. The expensive ones are several components that failed in sequence, because the first failure was quietly loading the next one for months.
It is not a lottery, and it is not about how bad the sag looks on the day you finally book it in.
What owners actually paid
Every figure here is from a specific owner writing up a specific repair, with the source next to it. Prices are as-quoted in the currency the owner used, in 2025–2026.

The spread between the top and bottom row is thirteen times over. Same car, same warning light, same “the air suspension needs service” message on the screen.
Note the two rows that matter most for what follows: a compressor is a $250 part, and an air spring is a $900 one. Neither is the expensive repair. The expensive repair is both, plus labour, plus whatever else was running hot by the time anyone looked.
Why the same symptom bills so differently
Here is the mechanism, and it is the entire article.
An air spring that leaks is not a part sitting quietly waiting to be replaced. It is a part that makes another part work harder. The suspension ECU keeps every corner at its target height, so when one corner bleeds down faster than it should, the fix it reaches for is the compressor — over and over, all day, including while the car is parked.
One owner documented the sequence precisely while replacing his own compressor:
“I started to hear my air compressor turning on a lot more than it used to and it was getting a lot noisier than it used to be. […] Clearly, this air shock or the lines to it were leaking and in turn making the compressor run a huge amount more than it was designed for.”
By the time he got there, the messages had already started: Air Compressor Disabled, Car Cannot Raise, showing up more often as the temperature dropped toward freezing. That is not a compressor that failed on its own schedule. That is a compressor that was worn out by a leak somewhere else.
So the invoice grows in stages:
- One corner develops a faster-than-normal leak. Nothing is visible. The compressor covers for it.
- The compressor runs well past its duty cycle, month after month, holding that corner up.
- The compressor starts failing — louder, more frequent, then error messages, then disabled.
- Now the quote covers a spring and a compressor, and once the car is on the lift and the other corners are the same age, “while we’re in there” does the rest.
Step 1 is a few hundred dollars. Step 4 is what a five-figure conversation looks like. Nothing unlucky happened in between — the same leak just ran for longer.
That is also why the 2016–2018 Model X has the reputation it does. As the owner of a 2017 put it while listing every fault of his first 17 months, the front air spring is “the one everyone warns about on 2016-2018 units, and sure enough.”
The DIY spread is real, and it is not a trick
The other reason quotes diverge so much: the same physical repair has two very different price tags depending on who does it and whose parts go in.
- Tesla air spring module: ~$900. Aftermarket equivalent: ~$300.
- Tesla compressor: ~$250. Amazon: ~$232.
One owner summarised the calculation as bluntly as it deserves: “when the price difference is as big as it is for something like the air spring, ~$300 VS $900, I’ll take my chances with the after-market.” Another did a front spring himself for $500 in parts and two hours.
These are bolt-on components, not sealed assemblies, and the DIY writeups exist because people have done them. That does not make it the right call for everyone — you are trading warranty and part longevity for a few hundred dollars, and a suspension component is not where everyone wants to economise. But it does mean a Tesla quote is a price, not the price.
What this actually costs you
I paid $5,612 for both front air struts on my 2017 Model X. Both were leaking.
The number is not the part that stayed with me. It was the timeline. By the time a corner visibly sagged in the driveway, those springs had been losing pressure for weeks — and every one of those weeks, the compressor had been picking up the slack. The failure was slow, invisible from the driver’s seat, and completely knowable in advance.
At step 1, that is a spring. At step 4, it is a spring, a compressor, and a bill with a comma in it.
How you get the cheap end instead
The gap between $425 and $5,612 is a gap in timing, so the only lever that moves you between them is finding out sooner.
The catch is that “check whether the car sagged overnight” doesn’t work — the compressor is specifically designed to make sure it doesn’t sag. That is its job. It will keep the car level right up until it can’t, which is the moment you stop being able to buy the cheap repair.
What does work is watching the two things the driver’s seat hides:
- Per-corner pressure drift while the car sits. A healthy air spring leaks a little; they all do. What matters is whether one corner is bleeding down faster than its three siblings, and whether that rate is climbing week over week.
- Compressor duty cycle. How often it runs, and for how long. This is the same signal that owner heard as “turning on a lot more than it used to” — except a log sees it months before an ear does.

- Nothing here is detectable by looking at the car. The compressor’s entire function is to make the problem invisible until it isn’t.
