“How many ‘Tesla battery replacement costs $40K’ articles are being written right now based on this misunderstanding?”
That comment sits partway down a 267-comment thread. At the top of the thread is a photograph of a Tesla work order for a 2013 Model S, total just under $40,000, posted with the caption “Upgrading to a 90kw. Just under $40k out the door.”
The commenter was right to ask. That invoice is a large part of where the internet’s Tesla battery number comes from, and it is not a battery replacement price.
The short answer
A Tesla HV battery replacement has been quoted between $13,000 and $21,000 through Tesla for legacy Model S/X packs, and between roughly $4,500 and $12,000 through independent specialists depending on whether the pack is repaired, remanufactured, or swapped whole. Numbers above that range almost always turn out to be something other than the price of a battery.
So before writing the car off, read the quote you were actually given.
What the $40,000 invoice actually said
Broken into line items, the work order covered:
- $13,000 — a replacement 60 kWh pack for the pack the car has
- $18,000 — a new 90 kWh pack
- $4,500 — the software unlock for the extra capacity in that 90 kWh pack
- plus associated parts
Those are not four things anyone buys. The first line is one path. The rest are the other path. A commenter had it read correctly within the hour:
“You asked for a quote to repair and a quote to upgrade so they did. The total is there bc it is an invoice and invoices have totals.”
The owner came back later in the thread and confirmed it:
“I see what you’re saying. It does look like a quote for both a 60kw replacement battery and a 90kw replacement/upgrade battery. Instead of separating them, they just said ‘here’s the total if we did both services.’”
Another owner explained why it comes out of Tesla’s system that way at all: “You have entered two separate concerns. Their system requires them to put the quote on each concern.”
So the real decision in front of that owner was $13,000 to keep driving the car he had, or about $22,500 to end up with more range than the car left the factory with. Neither of those is $40,000, and the difference between them is a choice, not a repair.
The $4,500 line is worth a note of its own, because it is the one that reliably starts arguments. It is not a part. It is a software unlock for capacity that is physically present in the 90 kWh pack, and the thread spent dozens of comments litigating whether charging for it is legitimate. That argument is genuinely unsettled and this article is not going to settle it. What matters for reading a quote is narrower: a line item on a Tesla invoice is not always a physical thing, so a total that looks impossible is worth itemising before believing.
The other way a quote gets misread
The second pattern is a diagnostic mistaken for a repair.
A 2016 Model X 90D died in the garage with BMS codes at 57,000 miles, two years after a full pack replacement under warranty and just outside the warranty window. The owner posted the estimate: $5,800 to check the battery relay system, and if that wasn’t the fault, a pack at $17,000+.
The first reply pushed back on exactly the right line:
"$5,800 to ‘check’ the battery relay system? That seems insane. I’ve read hundreds of posts like this one and I’ve never seen that charge mentioned. I would escalate and speak to the service manager for clarification."
The owner did, and updated the thread:
“Update. Spoke to service manager and he said once they pull the pack they will then be able to tell if it is the BMS or the pack. Total cost will be $1500 for that.”
Same car, same fault, same service centre. $5,800 became $1,500 because someone asked what the line item was. The pack question was still open at that point — but the price of finding out had dropped by a factor of four.

Three things decide where you land in it
1. Whether the car is still inside the warranty window
This is the single largest lever, and it is decided years before anything fails.
The cut is build date, not model year, and the two sides are sourced differently, which is worth saying plainly:
- Built later than roughly February 2020: 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, with 70% capacity retention. This is Tesla’s current published warranty, and it is what the page says today for Model S and Model X.
- Built before that: 8 years, unlimited miles. Tesla’s page describes the cars it sells now, not the terms an older car was sold under, so this one does not come from Tesla — it is the figure the used-market guides and owner threads consistently report. Which limit binds first flips with the car: on a high-mileage newer one the odometer runs out first, on an older low-mileage one the calendar does. Work out the exact months and miles remaining before you need them, not after.
Two details owners keep discovering the expensive way:
- The clock does not reset when the car is sold. It runs from the original in-service date, which is why build date matters more than mileage when buying a used Model S or X.
- A replacement pack carries its own, much shorter warranty. The owner who paid $21,000 for a new 90 kWh pack noted it came “backed by Tesla’s 4yr/50k mile warranty” — real coverage, but not another eight years.
The 2016 Model X above shows both edges of this at once: a brand-new pack fitted free at 43,000 miles under warranty, then a second failure at 57,000 miles that was entirely his to pay for.
2. The fault code, not the symptom
A 2013 Model S 85 at 114,000 miles started refusing to charge past 80% and was quoted $15,000 for a pack. The most useful reply in that thread was one sentence long:
“Depends on the code that’s limiting charging.”
That owner had run into BMS_u027 on his own 2015 85D — a weak internal short on a cell, which does mean a pack. But the same visible symptom, a reduced charge ceiling, also comes from faults that are not the pack at all. Several people told the 2013 owner to simply keep driving on 80%, and on the information in the post that was defensible advice.
A charge limit is a symptom. The pack quote follows from the code, so ask for the code.
3. Repair, remanufacture, or replace
Tesla replaces packs. Independent EV specialists will open one.
That is the whole reason the bottom of the table sits at $4,500 — a UK owner whose pack failed at 65,000 miles had the failed cells replaced and the pack laser-welded, then followed a relearn charging regime for a couple of weeks, after which the car performed as before.
The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly rather than selling. One commenter put the caution well: third-party warranties are weaker than Tesla’s on replacement packs, and after independent work on the high-voltage system there is a reasonable chance Tesla Service declines to touch it again. That is a much bigger deal if the nearest independent shop is four hours away than if it is across town.
Knowing before the quote arrives
Every story above starts the same way: the car did something alarming, and then someone found out what the pack was worth.
That order is backwards, and it is the one part of this you can change. Pack condition is not a sudden quantity. Watched continuously, capacity on my own 2017 Model X moved about 1.3% over seven months — slow, smooth, and boring, which is what healthy looks like. - The $40,000 invoice was two mutually exclusive options on one work order — $13,000 to replace, or ~$22,500 to upgrade. The owner confirmed it himself.
